Travelling to the EU post Brexit?
When booking appointments to obtain an AHC for your pet, please ensure you plan ahead and ring us at least 3 weeks before you need the appointment. The AHC require a lot of time and paperwork and it is becoming increasingly difficult o fit this work in to the diary.
Cancellation charge: a charge will be made for non-attendance or cancellation of AHC appointments (unless due to a change in
government rules).
Rules for travel with Pets has changed since leaving the EU
Pet Passports have become obsolete now that the UK has left the EU.
They have been replaced with the Animal Health Certificate (AHC).
A new certificate will need to be obtained every time you wish to travel to the EU or Northern Ireland with your pet.
The AHC must be obtained within 10 days prior to entry into the EU or Northern Ireland and is then valid for up to 4 months for onward travel within the EU and for re-entry into the UK.
To travel from the UK to any EU country or Northern Ireland you
must adhere to the following procedures:
- Microchipping
- Rabies vaccination
- Animal Health Certificate issued by vet
- Treatment for tapeworm by a vet and recorded on the AHC between 24 and 120 hours prior to entry to the following countries: Finland, Ireland, Malta, Northern Ireland and Norway.
- Treatment for tapeworm by a vet between 24 and 120 hours prior to return to the UK
Please note, there is a 21 day grace period after vaccination before travelling abroad.
We would also advise keeping up to date with routine annual vaccinations and parasite control to ensure your pet is fully
protected, although this is not a legal requirement.
Entry requirements can vary from country to country within the EU and we would advise contacting DEFRA for the most up to date information. For travel or export of your pet to countries outside the EU it may be necessary to obtain an oȚcial Export Health Certificate from DEFRA. It is important to plan well in advance as this process can be lengthy and time consuming.
