If your pet has been booked in at our Cranleigh surgery…
for a sedation or anaesthetic procedure please follow our guidelines.
Your pet must be fed dinner as usual, and then a small offering of their normal diet around 10pm – as advised below.
No more food after 10 pm as your pet must be starved for their procedure.
Leave water available overnight, but please lift this up first thing in the morning.
Vomiting under sedation / anaesthesia can lead to aspiration pneumonia and this is why your pet must be starved. However it is just as important for them not to be starved too long as this can also cause gastric reflux.
Please ensure your pet is clean. It is advisable to bathe your dog 24-48hrs prior to surgery.
With dogs please lead walk them on the day of admittance.
With cats please keep them in overnight prior to your appointment.
Pets are admitted between 8:30 am – 9:00 am on the morning of their procedure.
You are welcome to bring any favourite blanket or toy with your pet on the day.
We advise dogs and cats are fed soon after an anaesthetic to increase blood sugar levels and aid recovery. On recovery we will be offering your pet a specifically designed recovery diet. If your pet has a specific diet requirement we ask you to bring along a packed lunch for their visit.
We can also provide laser therapy for most patients following surgery.
Pre-operative bloods
Pre-operative bloods are advisable for pets over 8 years – the nurse will discuss this with you at the admittance appointment.
We ask that you call us from 2:00 pm so we can advise you of a collection time.
Discharge appointments are requested prior to 5:00 pm.
Your pet will need to be kept quiet and warm for the rest of the day and have bland, high protein food offered in the evening.
